FOPP Summer Newsletter

June 2018

Hello to all members and welcome to the FOPP Summer newsletter

WETLANDS: FOPP is really pleased to see the Wetlands Development walkways and classroom area has been completed. We understand discussions are being held with local schools and we are hopeful ecology lessons will be held for schools in this area soon. After a 6 week absence, I was very pleased to see the lush growth and abundant flora in this area when I walked through this week, I do hope this growth will deal with any remaining pollution from the December 23rd cooking oil spillage, a deliberate and criminal act in FOPP’s view.

SWANS: As most of you may know by now, the disaster of the deliberate cooking oil spillage, at the end of last year, put our swan family at risk and were in such poor condition that they had to be rescued by The Swan Sanctuary for treatment and had been progressing very well. Unfortunately, an outbreak of avian flu meant our healthy swans were released into the wild to save them from an expected cull by DEFRA. We were hopeful they would make their way back but this hasn’t happened. However, we are hopeful that our swan family are happy elsewhere. Although another swan pair did arrive and stayed a few weeks, they couldn’t settle and left of their own accord.

VISITORS CENTRE: We were upset to see the Visitors Centre has been targeted again along with the council yard, investigations are ongoing, it is believed this burglary was a professional attack rather than wanton vandalism, FOPP equipment did not suffer from much disruption and of course we never leave monies or valuable in the centre.

BATS: Last autumn a Bat survey took place and we have 6 species of Bat in Pymmes we have put a display up in the Visitors Centre.

VOLUNTEERING: We urgently need volunteers to help us keep our park the best in the borough

  1. Visitor centre open days, can anyone help man the visitor centre now and again, serving drinks and snacks to the public (no Cooking)

  2. Gardening, small-scale gardening in small areas at any one time around the visitor's centre.

  3. Organising community events in and around the Visitors Centre, FOPP are able for a small donation to host small-scale community events and provide toilet and refreshment facilities, an ideal venue to promote music,(there is an outdoor performance area) scouting, guiding, crafting for all the community.

As always please don’t hesitate to contact us about any antisocial behaviour in our park we will always report incidents on but better if you can report yourselves:

THE YACHT POND AREA: after a great deal of discussion with cash-strapped Enfield Council we are very pleased to announce some improvements are to take place in this area, already some path repairs have taken place and this week the wonderful Ground Force Volunteers have started undertaking other heavy work.  FOPP have been promised a company will come in too desilt the pond, any necessary repairs will follow, when this work is completed monies raised by FOPP will be spent on re-planting the area.

Wishing all members a very happy summer from the FOPP admin team.
